Several DubLi associates have asked me how to write their first online press release.  The youtuve video I recorded and seven steps I’ve listed below will provide a rough outline from which to launch your ideas.

1)    Choose a catchy, eye-grabbing title and summary to get engage readers.  Also include your long-tail keyword in the title and two sentence summary for search engine optimization.

2)    Elaborate on the summary in a 3-4 sentence introduction which covers the who, what, where, when, why and how.  This provides more comprehensive overview of the news’ relevance.

3)    Maintain a 3rd person point of view throughout the entire release.  I recommend you leave 1st and 2nd person language for social networking and blog posts (like this one!)

4)    Make sure its news-worthy material that’s recent news.  It can’t be construed with article content which is generally not time-sensitive.  Choose news topics such as your DubLi website launch, team achievements, E-book or product release or charitable partnerships.

5)    Illustrate the context by explaining how your company or service solved a larger problem, for instance how DubLi is increased online shopping and reverse auction usage from 2009 to 2010.

6)    Avoid hyped-up language, exclamation marks or strong sales pitches!!!  Press releases are intended to be non-bias, concise and fact-based.

7)    Close your press release with your Dubli contact information such as your website and phone number.  Follow this with a sentence about your company or team to bolster your branding.

Post your comments and questions below so I can provide additional tips.

  • Excellent training Dan! Press releases often rank very highly for keywords and can be great exposure for your site if not hyped up. Thanks for this resource.
